Publication presenting a rapid source estimation for epileptiform EEG dischargesIn this new publication “Relative Source Power: a novel method for localizing epileptiform EEG discharges” (Clinical Neurophysiology (2021), doi: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.clinph.2021.10.005), Scherg et al. describe a visualization method for directly estimating the localization of extra-temporal epileptic spike signals from EEG data of averaged events. The method was compared with other established source imaging methods in a retrospective study with 33 patients. The authors concluded that “[relative source power] RSP-maps provide a rapid, intuitive and more accurate source estimation than voltage maps. At sublobar level, RSP localizes with an accuracy similar to conventional methods and results of previous studies.” This shows that RSP can overcome the obstacle of having to interpret complex voltage patterns that are frequently observed in surface maps, and can become a robust tool to support evaluation of focal epilepsy cases.

The publication by BESA employees in collaboration with internationally renowned centers highlights that BESA keeps improving on the existing state of the art to continue shaping the future of neurology.
